Resources in my back pocket…. exploring the epistolary novel

Alas, it’s been some time since I posted here. I’ve had good intentions, really, but somehow managed to let my procrastination get the better of me… again.

As I was working recently on an assignment for an ELA/Social Studies methods course, I was listening to music on my iPod and Greensleeves of America’s song “Kilkelly, Ireland” came up on shuffle. I’ve always enjoyed this song, even if it is a bit ‘heavy-handed’. I was thinking about ELA/Social Studies already, and this song reminded me of a literary genre, the epistolary novel, that I (a) hadn’t thought much about in recent years, and (b) didn’t much care for when I had to read novels in this genre for Lit classes. However, I think that it is a genre that is part of the elementary curriculum; and it seems that kids in the elementary levels really enjoy this genre, at least in my experience. So I’ve earmarked this song as a wonderful introduction to or exploration of the genre, and in case we’ll be covering the Irish immigration in any future classes I might be teaching.
